Why Do You Need A Private Power Pole?

Published On: April 30, 2018

Sometimes you don’t have easy access to your street network power supply, so a private power pole might be required. A private power pole is a privately owned electricity source that connects your house to the public power supply by running cables from the public power to the private pole situated on your property.

Why do you need a private power pole

Often, the main reason for a private power pole is trying to run cables from the network power supply to the point of attachment at your house would be unsafe. Another common reason is during the course of building, you may not even HAVE a point of attachment so would use a temporary power pole to power your machinery.

In other cases, the choice can be purely for looks. In addition to tidying up your cables, a private power pole can look quite sleek and modern.

Key considerations of a private power pole

When installing or repairing a private power pole, there are a few key considerations.

1. Temporary or permanent

Is your private power pole temporary or permanent. This has a bearing on the installation process, as a temporary power pole is intended to be removed at a later date. Permanent private power poles are installed in a way that removal would be quite difficult, while a temporary private power pole will be much easier to remove.

2. What material do you use

We often work with steel as it’s quicker and easier to install, however it generally has a 15 year life before needing replacing. If you are looking for a permanent solution, you may wish to work with timber as it is rated for up to 30 years.

3. Maintenance

A private power pole is your responsibility to maintain.

You should keep an eye out for any leaning, instability, termite infestations, or trees and foliage that are growing too close to the pole. These are all things that can cause damage to your power pole, which can seriously impact your power supply.

If your property is in a bushfire zone, Ausgrid will regularly conduct inspections to ensure it doesn’t pose a risk.

4. Repairs

Both installation and repairs need to be undertaken by a qualified electrician who is licenced to do the work. Private power poles required an Electrician to be a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider. Please note that a regular electrician is unable to perform this work.
